Known issue with the EndNote X9.1 update for Mac

Mac users - Please update to version 9.1.1

There has been a bug in the EndNote X9.1 for Mac update and we strongly recommend to update to version 9.1.1.
See instructions on how to update to the latest version

Bug in the 9.1 Update for Mac

When importing .enw-files from Oria or Google Scholar you will get the error message "The library is currently being used by someone else". BI Norwegian Business School and other institutions have given Clarivate Analytics feedback about the issue and we hope it will be fixed soon.

We recommend NOT to upgrade to version X9.1 and instead wait for an update without this bug.

Here's a solution for those of you who have already updated to this version and are having trouble downloading .enw-files:

Google Scholar

  1. Go to Google Scholar
  2. Click the settings menu (three lines in the top left corner ) > Settings
  3. Set "Show links to import..." = RefMan.

Oria

In Oria you can choose Send to -> Export RIS

Other databases

  1. Choose Save File instead of opening it with EndNote

  2. Open your EndNote library and choose File -> Import

  3. Go to Downloads and find the downloaded .enw-file
  4. Choose Options

  5. Choose Reference Manager (RIS) in the drop-down menu Import Options

  6. Click Import

Alternative solution

An alternative solution is to downgrade EndNote to the previous version. To do this you must uninstall EndNote X9 and reinstall it, see installation instructions. Take a backup of your EndNote library if you decide to do this.

See instructions on how to make a local backup of your library. After installing EndNote again you will have to open your backup-file (.enlx) to extract your data.

EndNote for Mac: macOS Catalina Compatibility

macOS Catalina does not support 32-bit applications

Apple has released macOS Catalina which means that 32-bit applications will no longer be supported and this will impact EndNote.

Important about the new EndNote X9.3.1

This version of EndNote has a new 64-bit database format. When you open an existing library in version X9.3 for Mac, it will create a converted version of the library for use with this new database engine. The original library will not be changed, so you can continue using it in version X9.2 or earlier. Alternatively, use Sync to move your data across systems and versions.

You cannot open a version X9.3 library in version X9.2, on Mac or Windows! Instead, use Sync to move your data across systems and versions.

Update instructions for EndNote X9 (before updating to Catalina)

1. Download the EndNote X9.3 update (auto-update will not work)
http://web.bi.no/info/swdl.nsf

2. Quit EndNote and run the downloaded file
3. The next time you open EndNote, go to the EndNote X9 menu and choose "About EndNote" - If this reads EndNote X9.3.1 (Bld 15142) you have the latest version of EndNote installed.

Updated to Catalina before you updated to EndNote X9.3.1?

However, if you have already upgraded to Catalina OS before updating your EndNote program to EndNote X9.3.1, the EndNote app will be disabled in the Applications folder. To fix this, you would need to reinstall the EndNote X9 version with the latest update (EndNote X9.3.1).

Download the installer: http://web.bi.no/info/swdl.nsf

Once downloaded, double click the installer file to proceed with the installation. During installation, click OK when asked to overwrite the existing application.
