EndNote X9

Recommended style - APA 7th

The style you choose will define the look of your in-text-citations and the format of your reference list.

BI Norwegian Business School recommends its students to use the author-date system from APA.

Download and install reference style - APA

Writing in English: APA 7th

We recommend students to use the author-date system from APA. The English version of the reference style is preinstalled in EndNote 20.

Writing in Norwegian: APA Norsk Bokmål.

Download the style and follow these instructions:

1. Open the output style with EndNote 20.
2. Select File -> Save as.
3. Save the file. The file will be saved in the following folder: C:\Users\<username>\Documents\EndNote\Styles
4. Close the Style window and in EndNote select Select Another Style... from the Style drop down menu.

5. You should now find a short cut to the style in the drop down menu.
6. Click Choose in the dialog box.

Modifying an output style

If the reference style you need to use is not available in EndNote or from the additional EndNote Output Styles website,  you can create a style that matches your criteria by creating a new style or editing an existing one.

To do this:

  • Select Edit > Output Styles -> Open Style Manager and select the style that you would like to edit.
  • Before editing the style, create a copy and work from the copied file. Select File > Save as and rename the copied file.
  • In the style editing window, use the options on the left to edit your style. For example, select Templates under the 'Bibliography' heading to edit how the reference will appear in your bibliography/reference list.
  • Once the style has been altered and saved it will appear in your list of styles. To select the new style in EndNote or Microsoft Word choose Select Another Style... from the 'Styles' drop-down menus.
