EndNote 21

Remember to backup your files

Don't forget to save a copy of your EndNote library to ensure you don't lose your work.

There are a number of ways to create a backup:

  • Create a compressed library.
  • Sync with EndNote Online.
  • Save an exact copy of your library to a different folder.

Do NOT save your EndNote library in a cloud environment, such as Dropbox or Google Drive or even a network drive. This will eventually corrupt or damage your library. It is strongly recommended to save your library on your local hard drive. Backups of your library can be saved in any cloud service.

Compressed Library - Local backup of your EndNote library

You can save your EndNote library to a single compressed file in order to easily back up your library, or send a copy of the library on e-mail to yourself.

  1. Select File -> Compressed Library.

    dialog_box_compressed_library
  2. In the dialog box, press Next.
  3. Choose where you want to save the .enlx backup file.

Create EndNote Online account

In order to set up sync, sharing and collaboration in an EndNote library, all users have to set up an EndNote Online account.

  1. Create an account at www.myendnoteweb.com(NB! Use this link if you are outside of campus https://ezproxy.library.bi.no/login?qurl=https://access.clarivate.com/login?app=endnote)
  2. Click Sign Up and fill out out the form.

Setting up synchronization

Before a library can be shared, all collaborators must set up sync in EndNote 21. This will also give you a backup of your EndNote library in the cloud.

  1. Go to EndNote.
  2. Click Library -> Sync.
  3. Fill in the username and password created for the EndNote Online account. (You may have to fill in the same form you filled in when creating your account.)
  4. When the form is completed, the EndNote Sync will begin.

Save an exact copy of your library to another folder

An EndNote library consists of an EndNote library file with the suffix .enl and a .DATA-folder. To make a backup you must copy both the .enl-file and the .DATA-folder and put them in the same folder.

1. Find your library by using the File Explorer on your computer.
2. Copy BOTH the .enl-file and .DATA-folder.

3. Paste the files into a new folder.
